Leisure is a very important part of a person’s life, be it a school going child, or a working individual. Leisure may mean different to different people, but it basically is the free time that one has; the time apart from a person’s working or studying hours.
How a person chooses to spend his or her free time depends on his age, his type of work, his interests, hobbies etc. Trends have changed drastically in the last few years, but there still remains a lot of similarity. A large part of the American population spends a definite part of this time watching television. Using the Internet as a leisure activity is a growing and popular trend. People also spend quality leisure time with their family, in household and personal care activities and in socializing. Here again, the social networking sites provide an easier and faster method.
Traveling and going on vacations is yet another popular way of spending leisure time and it is becoming even more popular, owing to the desire for new experiences. A chunk of the population also spends this time on health activities and sports, though classifying this time within leisure hours may not be completely justified. Moreover, many people like to spend their ‘free time’ idly, doing nothing, just relaxing.
What is work for one man may mean leisure and recreation for another. What counts as leisure time has always been an argument. But however you define it, you always seem to run short of it. Those particular set of activities and jobs left to be done in leisure always seem to get postponed. There never is enough of leisure and we blame it to the fast growing pace of modern life. Now, this might surprise you:facts and statistics state that the number of average leisure hours that an American’s life has not declined much in the last fifty years or so. What has changed is the way in which that time is utilized, leaving you with less time for those important, unfinished jobs.
Whichever way you may choose to spend it, it is true that a proper and well-managed utilization of leisure time not only refreshes you, but also enhances your working ability. On the other hand, workaholics have to pay the price for their incessant work in one way or the other. As goes the popular proverb, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy!”
